UNM Fall Scopes Lab: Advancing Surgical Education Through Hands-On Training

Arthrex was proud to partner with the University of New Mexico to host a two-day Scope Lab, offering surgeons, fellows, and residents the opportunity to refine advanced arthroscopic techniques in a state-of-the-art training environment. The event combined lectures with extensive lab time, ensuring participants could immediately apply concepts in a hands-on setting.

Day one opened with a focus on meniscus repair techniques, including inside-out, outside-in, and all-inside approaches using FiberStitch and Knee Scorpion instrumentation. Faculty also guided participants through root repair with SutureLoc, microfracture with awls, and creative teaching aids like popcorn kernels for station practice. In the afternoon, the lab shifted to complex reconstruction procedures, including ACL reconstructions with hamstring autograft using ACL TightRope and GraftBolt, and PCL reconstructions with allograft tendon, supported by interference screws, FlipCutters, and tibial guides. The day concluded with an endoscopic spine session and a group dinner to foster collaboration and discussion.

Day two continued the momentum with rotator cuff repair using FiberTaks and SwiveLock anchors, as well as advanced training in CuffMend graft augmentation for fellows. The agenda expanded to include labral repair with FiberTaks, SutureTaks, and biceps tenodesis options, before moving into a comprehensive multiprocedure session. This included OATS allograft transplantation, tibial eminence fracture fixation, AC separation repair with CC ligament reconstruction, collateral ligament techniques, MPFL/TTO procedures, and Latarjet reconstruction.

Throughout the lab, surgeons and fellows engaged with cutting-edge Arthrex technology in an environment designed to replicate real-world surgical conditions. The event not only enhanced technical skills but also supported Arthrex’s mission of “Helping surgeons treat their patients better™.
